IELTS is expensive, and test dates in many African and Asian cities fill up weeks in advance, so it is no surprise that “study abroad without IELTS” is one of the most searched phrases in international education. The good news is that many universities accept other ways of proving your English. The catch is that visa rules sometimes require a specific test even when the university does not.

Accepted Alternatives to IELTS

Universities usually list their accepted English proofs on each programme page, and the list is often longer than applicants expect. These are the alternatives you will see most often:

  • Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter: A letter from your university confirming your degree was taught entirely in English.
  • Duolingo English Test (DET): An online test taken at home, widely accepted by universities in the US, Canada, and parts of Europe.
  • TOEFL iBT: The main US-origin test, accepted almost everywhere IELTS is.
  • PTE Academic: A computer-based test with fast results, popular for Australia and the UK.
  • Cambridge English (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency): Certificates that do not expire and are accepted by many European universities.
  • School-leaving English grades: Some universities accept a strong English grade from exams such as WAEC, NECO, or KCSE.
  • University interview or in-house test: Some institutions assess your English themselves, often online.

Acceptance varies by university and even by programme, so never assume an alternative works because a friend used it elsewhere. Check the exact wording on the admissions page, and email the admissions office if it is unclear.

Top Countries Where You Can Study Without IELTS

The countries below are the most practical options for applicants who want to skip IELTS. For each one, the key question is not only what the university accepts, but whether the student visa also allows it.

United Kingdom

Many UK universities accept an MOI letter, a strong school-leaving English grade, or their own online interview for degree-level study. For degree courses, UK visa rules let the university assess your English itself, so you may not need a separate approved test for the visa. Courses below degree level, such as some foundation programmes, usually require a Home Office approved Secure English Language Test.

Germany

English-taught master’s programmes at German universities frequently accept an MOI letter or a previous degree taught in English. The German student visa process generally follows the university’s decision on language, so an accepted MOI letter is usually enough. German-taught programmes require German proof, such as TestDaF or DSH, instead of English.

United States

US universities set their own English policies, and many accept the Duolingo English Test, TOEFL, or an English-medium degree. Some waive testing for applicants from English-speaking countries or those who studied in English for several years. The US student visa itself does not require an English test; the consular officer relies on your admission and may assess your English at the interview.

Canada

Many Canadian universities and some colleges accept Duolingo, an MOI letter, or several years of English-medium study. The study permit has no separate English test requirement under the regular stream, but your school must be satisfied first. Note that some programmes, especially in healthcare, still insist on IELTS or CELPIP-style results.

Australia

Australia is the toughest option here, because the student visa requires a test from an approved list, such as IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT, unless you qualify for an exemption. Exemptions apply mainly to passport holders from the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland, or to those who completed certain studies in English. If you want to skip IELTS specifically, PTE Academic is usually the easiest swap.

Other Options: Italy, Hungary, Türkiye, and Malaysia

Many public universities in Italy and Hungary accept MOI letters for English-taught programmes, and scholarship schemes like Stipendium Hungaricum often test English at interview. Türkiye Bursları does not require IELTS to apply, and many universities in Malaysia accept school results or in-house tests. Always confirm visa rules for these countries as well, since requirements can change.

How to Get an MOI Letter That Universities Accept

An MOI letter is only as good as its wording, and a vague letter is one of the most common reasons universities still ask for IELTS. Request it from your university’s registrar or academic office, not from a single lecturer.

A strong MOI letter should include the following details:

  • Official letterhead: Printed on your university’s headed paper with full contact details.
  • Your full name and degree: Matching your passport and transcripts exactly.
  • Clear statement of English instruction: Confirming that teaching and assessment for the entire programme were in English.
  • Study dates: The start and end dates of your programme.
  • Signature and stamp: From the registrar or an authorised officer, with the date of issue.

Some universities also want the letter sent directly by your institution, or they ask for it to be dated within the last year. Check these details before requesting, since getting a second letter can take weeks.

Final Thoughts: Skip IELTS, Not the Research

Studying abroad without IELTS is realistic in the UK, Germany, the US, Canada, and several other countries, especially if your previous degree was taught in English. The key is confirming two things: what your target university accepts, and what your visa requires. A university offer does not always guarantee that the embassy will accept the same proof.

If you do need a test, Duolingo, PTE, or TOEFL may be cheaper or easier to book than IELTS. Start gathering your MOI letter and transcripts early so that language proof never holds up your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study in the UK without IELTS?

Yes, many UK universities accept an MOI letter, a school-leaving English grade, or their own interview for degree-level courses. Courses below degree level usually require a Home Office approved English test.

Is Duolingo accepted instead of IELTS?

Many universities in the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe accept the Duolingo English Test. It is not accepted for Australian student visas, so check visa rules as well as university policy.

Can I get a student visa without IELTS?

Often yes, since the UK (for degree courses), the US, Canada, and Germany generally rely on the university’s assessment of your English. Australia is the main exception, requiring an approved test unless you qualify for an exemption.

What is an MOI letter?

An MOI (Medium of Instruction) letter is an official document from your university confirming that your degree was taught in English. Many universities accept it as proof of English instead of IELTS.

Do scholarships require IELTS?

Some do, but many accept alternatives. Türkiye Bursları does not require IELTS to apply, and some Erasmus Mundus and DAAD courses accept MOI letters.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?

Many students find PTE Academic faster to book and quicker to receive results, since it is fully computer-based. Whether it is easier depends on your skills, so try practice tests for both before choosing.
